Spray on Fireproofing to Roof Structural Steel

Building Structure is required to be fire rated as it is meant for occupants. There are more building structure is constructed in steel structure frame, therefore the fire protection to the surface and prolong the structure integrity and prevent premature failure of the protected structural steel framed is very important. The widely used  spray on or spray applied fireproofing is used for the roof, columns and beam steel structure in Singapore.

Spray On Fire protection to Structural Steel

The structural steel is a non-combustible material. The high sustained temperatures of a fire and heat can severely damage the unprotected steel. The Structure steel will lose approximate 50% of its load carrying capacity as temperatures approach  600ºC.
With the fire proofing protection to the surface by encasing the steel and insulating it, it will help to keep the steel temperature below the point where design strength is compromised. The thickness of the fireproofing protection required will depend on the test and required hourly rating to be achieved base on various sizes, thickness of the steel members.

Spray on Fireproofing Application

The spray on or applied on fireproofing material can be in cementitious, gypsum based or fibre insulation base to achieve the necessary fire rating structural steel. It is usually spray applied over the rigid structural steels, such as roof structure, beams, columns and steel staircase. It is one type of widely used passive fire proofing protection system and recognised by Engineer, industry and SCDF.

Application to

  • Apply to the rigid structural steel members, steel beams, columns, staircase, metal roof and steel metal deck
  • Also can apply for partition wall and concrete wall
  • Can be used to exterior ( subject to weather) or interior surface

Benefits of Spray on Fireproofing System

  • fast and easy application
  • provide up to 4 hour fire resistance ratings
  • UL fire tested and factory inspected
  • resist damage from air erosion and abrasion
  • cost effective compare with intumescent paint coating
  • filled irregular shape
  • low maintenance
  • highly durable and resist to heat and fire

Why Vermiculite instead of Ordinary Cement Plaster ?

The ordinary cement sand plaster which can be expanded and explode during fires when subjected to high temperatures, but, the vermiculite contain cement have low linear expansion characteristics which greatly reduce the number and size of cracks.

Due to lesser size of cracks through the surface, the heat and flames of fire cannot easily  penetrate the plaster surface as easily or quickly. The normal cement plaster also will easily de-bond and not suitable to plaster on the surface of steel structures, unlike the vermiculite.
