Fire Rated Board System
The installation of fire rated board can be in wall ( lining) or ceiling as required by local building codes whether it is on interior or exterior wall on the certain rooms, fire escape way or passage. The fire rated board system is commonly used in Singapore to most of the building and industrial project due to it is light, easy installation and fast. It can used it act as drywall, to the ceiling, to floor or any box up area that can’t build it on block wall or RC wall.
What is Fire Rated Lining
The fire rating board is consist of non-combustible core, composed primarily of gypsum or cement and surfacing on a paper as a face. The construction of system of the fire rating board is called drywall and some time they name it as plasterboard or cement board. The framing system is normally form with aluminium channel, steel hollow section and in-fill ( or sandwich) with rockwool in order to archive the required fire rating hour.
The surface which is finished with a paper can be easily painted in any time of paint.
The different product and system is required to follow strictly on the manufacturer detail as tested on the type of framing being used, spacing of the stud, thickness of the board in order to meet the requirement and certify by the Engineers.
Fire Safety Products and Materials
All the fire rated safety products and materials are regulated in Singapore by the Singapore Civil Defence Force ( SCDF). Only approved material and system by the SCDF can be used before obtained the certification.
Ask for Certification of Conformity ( COC) from the contractor and supplier before you award the work and ensure their is design and system that complied to the hour rating. The manufacturers is required to demonstrate their commitment and compliance to the product and safety requirement in accordance to Singapore or international standards.
Fire Compartment to Wall, Ceiling and Floor
Accordingly to the structure fire precaution practice by the SCDF, the integrity and stability of the building elements within the required period of time. The structure element is included the door, wall, shaft, floor and ceiling if required to be fire rated to complied with fire compartment criteria.
The objective of structure fire precaution:
- to prevent the spread of fire between adjoining building
- to prevent ultimate collapse of building, including wall and floor on each unit in the event of fire
- to prevent spread of fire from one unit to another within the building envelop by compartmentalising each unit with wall, floor and door having the requisite fire resistance rating
How to Know whether my building is complied ?
If you have an existing building, or purchase a resale factory, shop etc, it is advised to engage a specialist or Engineer to check whether it is compliance to the fire code. As there are many factors and criteria which is depend on the the usages of the properties, layout, type of material to/being used etc., a site inspection and submission for consultation to SCDF can be handle by the specialist and professional engineer.

The construction detail of the fire rating gypsum or cement board system shall follow strictly to the manufacture tested application.
